Farewell to a fruit

Dear Pineapple -

I’ve loved you for as long as I can remember. You are a universal symbol for hospitality. You were the reason I learned to use a can opener. You were my childhood’s Saturday morning “Mom’s sleeping in” breakfast. You were my after-school snack. You could give me a fork and I’d drink the juice when I was done. Nothing was wasted. I worshiped a god named Dole.

When I was pregnant with Doodle, my cravings got worse. I lusted for your fresh flesh. No trip to the grocery store was complete unless you were in my basket. Canker sores be damned. I loved you and I would eat until I could eat no more.

But now, you’ve turned on me. Last month, I sampled a few wedges of your golden, sinewy goodness at a cocktail party and awoke the next day to having my voice possessed by Kathleen Turner and my sinuses possessed by the Swamp Thing. What came out of me was not pretty. What was worse was the rash that broke out on my face. Never had a food plagued me with such a Benadryl-grasping reaction.

This…

+ this… = not a pretty me.

I thought it was merely a fluke. It could have been anything on that plate could have been the culprit, right? The cantaloupe? The honeydew? The cheese? All items I’d had before. Someone had turned on me. I hoped it wasn’t you.

But it was.

Last weekend, I couldn’t pass up a bowl of the famous Tiki Room Dole Whip at Disneyland. I figured, if it was you, it was only a reaction to the potency of your freshness, not your entire existence.

Sure enough, the scratchy throat and green goop was back. The eczema was masked by the mild sunburn resulting from a day of exposure to the day star in the Magic Kingdom. But all of the prayer to the Tiki gods did me no good.

We must part ways. It breaks my heart to let you go. You’ve been a great immunity booster for the last thirtysomething years. But I must bid you adieu, my sweet love and hope that some day in the not too distant future, we can reunite without the toxicity.

Love,

Nancy

  1. I too know a similar sadness, it is for the lovely and wonderous foodgroup known as shellfish. I mourn my shrimp, crab and lobster like the loss of a dear friend. I was greedy in my youth and now suffer the wrath of crustacean. Tears to you and the pineapples

  2. Oh, man. That sucks! I love pineapple and all things derived from any type of “paradise”. Very sorry for you and your new affliction. Take the proper time to mourn. =)
Love your blog and look forward to reading more!

  3. I had no idea that a person can be allergic to pineapple. How odd. And, poor you for having to give it up.

My younger girl is allergic to strawberries, which isn’t so unusual, but she’s also allergic to apples and carrots, which I’ve never heard of.

  4. My #2 son is allergic to melons of all sort – but he can pop habeneros like they were candy. No one else in the family has such an allergy.

Me, now, I used to love grapefruit juice. On Saturday mornings, when we would go to my favorite breakfast restaurant, the waitress would just automatically bring me a) coffee, black and b) a tall glass of grapefruit juice which I would immediately chug. But a few years ago I started taking Lipitor to manage cholesterol. At the time, Lipitor was new. No one knew that grapefruit juice contained a chemical which amplified the effect of Lipitor to the point that you thought you had the Flu. Or that you had gotten some bad Grapefruit Juice. Yes, THAT kind of effect. So I don’t get to drink my beloved Grapefruit Juice anymore.

  5. I’m far more mundane. My only known food issue is lactose. At least there are pills that may (or may not) allow me to enjoy.

The August 2009 Scientific American has an article on Celiac with coming treatments that have implications for a wide array of food issues and other medical problems.

  6. I’m allergic to Mango’s and Kiwi so I know the sadness you must feel for pineapples :(

  7. I’m lucky not to have any food allergies… but also unlucky because that means I can eat EVERYTHING. I hope the pineapple allergy is only temporary.

  8. Well that’s a drag, after having loved pineapple for so long. Actually, it’s not the first time I’ve heard of adults developing allergies when they had none as a child. I am now “allergic” to most things cheese and fat related, as in must avoid as much as possible to avoid the ER and possible emergency gall bladder surgery. But the fringe benefits aren’t too bad.

I had an allergy to strawberries for about a year when I was 12 years old. I outgrew it.

    But you’re a young’un, maybe you’ll outgrow it too ;) !
