‘Tis a Gift to be Simple

Here’s Wednesday’s edition of my blessed absence. Thanks to one of my favorite Plurk buddies, Ruprecht who blogs at Frolicky. I can always count on him to keep me on track with one snarky smart-assed comment after another. I even like him even though he (sort of) stood me up on my business trip to So. Cal (something about kids, work, blah, blah, blah. The NERVE!). We’ll this is his get out of jail card. Read and enjoy!

Rupe’s talkin’ thankfulness here.

And here’s what thanks Rupe’s talkin’ ‘bout, Willis.

… I’m thankful for blinking.

Without blinking, I wouldn’t be able to remove those annoying little motes that get in my eye …

… I’m thankful for my long reach.

Without my long reach, I wouldn’t be able to get to that itch in the middle of my back.

… I’m thankful for sneezing.

Without sneezing, I wouldn’t be able to loose the irritants that lodge in my nose. They’d just build up, y’know? And then there would be a whole new set of problems.

… I’m thankful for tired feet.

Tired feet let me know I’ve been walking or climbing all day … or at least a goodly part of it. Man, am I thankful I get the opportunity to moan about my tired feet.

… I’m thankful for tiredness that vanishes with a simple morning’s coffee and a shower.

Without these, I’d know not for certain that tiredness could ever be vanquished again.

… I’m thankful for splinters and papercuts and annoying nicks.

Without these, the feeling of being whole again would escape my notice.

… I’m thankful for washing machines.

Without them, I wouldn’t know what a prize a clean piece of clothing is.

… I’m thankful for the cold of night. And ability to come in from it.

… I’m thankful for the annoying sound of the paper slapping in the middle of my driveway at 5:15 on a Saturday morn, waking me from a sound slumber.

Without that sound to wake me, I might sleep the morning away and be all the lesser for not getting a head start on the important project that really needs to get moving in order to get completed. (Because we all know things need to commence in order to finish.) Procrastination has the tendency to do that to you, you know.

Do you get the sense there’s a common theme here?

There is.

Simple Things.

And I am blessed to have a lot of simple things in my life. Tons and tons of simple things. Simple things so, so simple, I easily forget them … forget about them … forget that they’re even there. Forget that they’re there to make life worth living. To remind me of how fortunate I am I’m able to do what I can do simply because of some of the simple things in life.

Think about it: You really don’t think about the simple things, do you? You really do take advantage of them, don’t you? That’s okay. They’re “simple”. They don’t mind. They don’t hold grudges. They don’t feel slighted. That’s what they’re there for.

I am blessed with the simple things in my life. They are too numerous to mention. But I’m deeply thankful for them.

Without them, it just wouldn’t be the life I know.

  1. Done as only Ruprecht could do it. Really made me sit back and think about the simple things that I overlook everyday. Well done.

  2. This perspective and the easy, playful and eccentric way it is presented is why I I am thankful for having Rupe in my life. Everyday I get to enjoy his musings. Fantastic reminder of what the building blocks of a happy life are Rupe… well done, indeed :)

  3. I shall never hear Simple Gifts again without thinking of my good friend Rupe.

And, Rupe, again – we share a brain, for I am thankful for painful things in life because without them, joy would not be so glorious.

    Well said and eloquently so.

    Thanks!

  4. I worked with a man who, when anyone started griping, he’d get out a piece of paper and label it A-Z. The heading “MY GRATITUDE LIST” If someone groaned about a specific person, he insisted the list be positive things about the person in question.
It makes ya wake up and smell the roses (which I am grateful for.)

  5. Ohhh this falls in line with the theme from my post, “A blessing in everything.” WOOT! Kat is the reason I came up with my theme (thank you Kat). I wish I had read this first, because as I read your list, I thought of another dozen blessings!

    Excellent post, Rupe.

    xoxo
